African Gay Couple's Wedding Reality-TV Series Breaks Viewership Records on Showmax

An African same-sex celebrity wedding special named, "Somizi and Mohale: The Union" officially broke the viewership records for the international streaming service, Showmax.


According to The South African, the first episode of the series premiered on February 24th, which showed their traditional wedding that brought together their Zulu and Sotho cultures in a big celebration. Episodes of the series will be released on Showmax every Monday until the big finale on March 16th.

Based on a press release from Showmax, the series had broke the all-time record for the number of first day views on the streaming service beating The Girl From St Agnes, The South African reports.


This show came within an influx of Showmax producing original content for the streaming service.


"We expected Somhale to do well but the response was bigger than we hoped, and it goes to show how our shift to local content is paying dividends" said Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of Connected Video division of MultiChoice.
