The third season of the Disney’s Ducktales reboot on Disney XD explores the adventures of Dewey, Lewey and Huey. The show's most recent episode introduces a gay couple and their child. Throughout the episode, Violet Sabrewing and her supportive dads Tyrian “Ty” Sabrewing and Indigo “Indy” Sabrewing are featured heavily, especially as the pair expands their family.

Within the episode, Violet’s parents adopt her friend, Lena. Lena’s celebration with her “sister from a couple of misters” is a progressive example of same-sex marriage in mainstream and television.

This inclusion comes with a wave of great support and appreciation. Disney’s introduction of a same-sex couple comes after Nickelodeon “shattered animated ceiling with gay cartoon interracial couple” on The Loud House,” in 2016.

Story editor and co-executive producer Frank Angones stated, “As with all of our characters, we had a lot of conversations about who Violet was and what her background was and came up with this fun notion of her too enthusiastic, overly supportive dads who love being dads.”

Some supporters and fans expressed their support of this progression on Instagram and Twitter. Representation, even in children’s’ entertainment is need to build tolerance and understanding different kinds of family. On Twitter, one wrote: “ I think my favorite thing on the internet today is two gay dads in today’s episode of Ducktales.”

Another expressed: “That was a really good episode. There was a mystery, they rewrote history, and Ducktalesfinally introduced a gay couple.”

“We didn’t really have a story built around them, but when the time came for an episode focusing on Huey and Violet in a particular situation, it made sense that they would be there," Angone continued.

As small steps are made towards proper representation of same-sex couples, this change will eventually create a chain-reaction— as more and more queer and LGBTQ+ identities will be reflected in entertainment.
