JoJo Siwa's Celebrity Big Brother Romance is Sparking A Bigger Conversation on Sexual Identity

Entertainment News

Singer and reality TV breakout star JoJo Siwa recently gagged the internet, confirming that she and Celebrity Big Brother UK costar, Chris Hughes, are officially a couple.

This announcement comes weeks after weeks of eyebrow raises from fans who noticed that the duo's developing chemistry in the Big Brother house. Alongside a mix of questionable Instagram photo dumps, flirty captions, and spicy Snapchat pics showing the Love Island bombshell cuddled up shirtless in bed with Siwa after the show.

“It’s not platonic anymore, and it’s been a beautiful development. A beautiful connection, and I’m absolutely head over heels for him, and he’s the same way,” the pop singer told The Guardian. “People can see our chemistry, and they got to see it develop.”

During her time in the Big Brother house, Siwa (who goes by all pronouns) opened up about her evolving sexual identity. In a candid conversation with fellow contestant and Drag Race UK alum Danny Beard, she shared, “I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian…and I think being here, I’ve realized: I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer.”

She added, “I’ve dropped the L and I’ve gone to the Q, baby! That’s what I love about sexuality.”

Her newfound revelation has sparked a range of reactions, with some praising her openness, while others accuse her of giving off cringe, clout chaser energy.

Critics are dissecting the timeline: Siwa publicly came out as lesbian in 2021 after taking to TikTok singing Lady Gaga's Born This Way. She was reportedly in a relationship with Australian influencer Kath Ebbs since January 2025. And once Big Brother wrapped in April 2025, the former Dance Moms star was accused of “emotional cheating,” and allegedly dumped Ebbs at the Big Brother Afterparty as outlined in a since-deleted TikTok.

JoJo told US Weekly that Chris had “absolutely nothing” to do with the end of her relationship with Kath. She also went on to say, “I had a lot of talks with my ex about that and we cleared it up. They said that out of anger and frustration, but they also know that’s not true. I think that was very uncool of them and I was very honest with them about that.”

“There’s a lot of different sexual identities. I think there’s nothing more beautiful than somebody discovering themselves.”

Since her release of her song and music video for Karma in April 2024, it seems as if the LGBTQ+ community specifically, has been ripping JoJo to shreds about how she shows up.

“JoJo Siwa is exemplary of a problem plaguing her generation: willful ignorance about the past coupled with keen eagerness to be “iconic,” said social media expert Kadian Pow.

The dancer stated in response to ongoing “pick me” allegations, “There’s a lot of different sexual identities. I think there’s nothing more beautiful than somebody discovering themselves.”

From the outside looking in, it might seem like JoJo’s love life was curated for headlines. TikToks dissecting her dating history. Reddit threads speculating her motives. But beyond the rainbow wigs and 8-counts is a 22-year-old figuring it out in real time, in front of the entire world.

For queer people it seems like there’s often this underlying pressure to get it right the first time. Labels become law and any deviation from that can be seen as possible betrayal or a facade. JoJo, who once confirmed her lesbian identity, seems to be trying to make room for a new chapter and it’s one that’s messier, and perhaps, more honest.

We can’t deny that her statement holds value—sometimes the queer experience isn’t linear. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to others, but your personal experiences lead you right where you’re supposed to be.

Ironically, Siwa isn’t the first celeb to face this type of scrutiny in the media when it comes to labels. Demi Lovato, who has publicly identified as pansexual, nonbinary, and now fluid, was dragged similarly for sharing her truth. Their journey is also a depiction that self-discovery sometimes contradicts what we thought we always knew about ourselves.

Whether JoJo Siwa’s story ends in forever love with Chris Hughes, or is just a glittery UK detour, she’s showing the world something important: queer stories can actively be rewritten. If queerness is about anything, it’s about truth, and sometimes that clarity takes time to come into focus.
