Robert De Niro Proudly Supports His Trans Daughter – While Eddie Murphy’s Trans Son Quietly Steps Into His Truth

Entertainment News

Robert De Niro recently delivered a short, heartfelt statement to Variety in support of his daughter, Airyn De Niro, and it was the kind of moment the internet just can’t let go of. His statement wasn’t dramatic or long-winded either, just real and in true De Niro fashion:

“I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is. I love all my children.”

The statement alone made headlines across media platforms and LGBT+ spaces, and rightfully so. In a cloudy climate where trans youth and adults are often met with ignorance or silence, De Niro’s lack of hesitation to show love to his family really models what affirming parenting can look like. No big spectacle. Just honest and protective.

The moment came shortly after Airyn’s interview with Them, where the 29-year-old opened up about her experiences navigating identity, race, and beauty standards growing up. She called herself a “late bloomer,” having started hormone therapy in November 2024, and credited the visibility of other Black women, including Laverne Cox and Jools Lebron, for helping Airyn find the courage to step fully into herself.

“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet,” she said.

Airyn’s vulnerability sparked conversation and celebration. Her father’s words added weight too, showing what it means when parents actively and intentionally affirm their children’s identities. The Godfather’s parental support was a big deal not just because of who he is, but because it came without hesitation or condition.

In a quieter but no less important moment, another legacy child is stepping forward: Angel Murphy, the son of Eddie Murphy and Spice Girl, Mel B, publicly clarified their gender identity. Shortly after turning 18, Angel confirmed in an Instagram comment to a fan who misgendered him that he uses he/him pronouns.

Unlike De Niro, Eddie Murphy nor Mel B have made an official statement, and honestly, that’s okay. Support doesn’t always have to come with a press tour. What matters is Angel’s agency and the space he’s created for himself in his own way, on his own terms.

Together Airyn and Angel show us that there’s no single way to transition, and trans-identity, like any identity, isn't monolithic. Their stories help expand our collective understanding, inspire empathy, and remind us that these journeys deserve respect.

In a time when trans rights are under attack and difference is often too weaponized, these moments of visibility and support, help normalize what’s always been true: people are beautifully complex and deserving of love exactly as they are.
