Russian President Vladimir Putin Calls Trans People "Transformers"
It used to be that presidents would think before they spoke, but I suppose that time is gone. Russian President, Vladimir Putin, made a speech before the G20 summit this year that ruffled some feathers saying:
"They’ve thought up six or five genders – transformers, trans… I don’t even understand what it is myself."
Since the president seemed to be so very confused on what transgender people are, Russian LGBTQIA groups decided to help him out by flooding his offices with queer brochures as reading material. But it wasn't the LGBT that Putin was talking to in that summit. It was actually Elton John. #Elton John wrote a letter to the Russian president criticizing his LGBT policies and for censoring the gay scenes of his movie Rocketman. Putin clarified that that ban only applied toward targeting minors.
He spoke with the Financial Times saying:
"I am not trying to insult anyone because we have been condemned for our alleged homophobia. But we have no problem with LGBT persons. God forbid, let them live as they wish. But some things do appear excessive to us. They claim now that children can play five or six gender roles."
"Let everyone be happy, we have no problem with that," he added. "But this must not be allowed to overshadow the culture, traditions and traditional family values of millions of people making up the core population."
The policy Elton is referring to is the ban Russia made against LGBT propaganda.
There is no law banning LGBT person's, however there are also no laws protecting them. It may not have occurred to the president that those gender roles are relevant because that is who those people are, but i suppose the president has not gotten to that part of his reading yet.
