After his arrest in 2017 Reynhard Sinaga, also known as Rey, has been sentenced to a life sentence with a minimal term increased to 30 years.
Sinaga has committed 159 offenses including 136 cases of unprotected anal rapes, all filmed on his two iPhones. 48 of his victims testified in court. The amount of people meant four separate trials starting in May 2018 and ending in Christmas 2019. For the privacy of the victims there was a media blackout on the trial with no cameras going in or out.
Reynhard Sinaga was a student in Manchester, England from Indonesia. Starting in 2015 he began a routine to lure heterosexual men to his flat under the guise of being a good samaritan. Sinaga would wander a place called The Factory or Fifth, which were nightclub scenes. He would approach intoxicated men on sidewalks, kicked from bars and taxi's and separated from friends or partners and offered them a place of safety, a drink, or tell them of another party.
At his flat, Sinaga would give them what he bragged on social media was a "magic poison" to make men fall in love. "Black magic yeah! Rey makes drink potion of gay love haha … Take a sip of my secret poison, I’ll make you fall in love.”
Police never found the drug that Sinaga used but believe that it was gamma-hydroxybutyric acid –GHB- otherwise known as liquid ecstasy. 1ml can knock a man out. Reynard was constantly on WhatsApp and Grindr posting messages about turning straight men gay. He himself was openly gay and a common face around places like the Gay Village and Canal Street.
Sinaga's downfall began when a 19-year old woke up in the middle of his sexual assault. Realizing what was going on he beat Sinaga to where he thought he may have killed him and called 999. Sinaga was taken on a stretcher and the young victim was arrested.
In detainment the police found 3.29 TB ographic sexual material on Sinaga's phone. Every man had been raped, the victims items collected as souvenirs, and pictures were taken of the men next to their I.D cards and passports for Sinaga's "collection". After hours of watching the videos, Manchester police counted about 195 male victims. Some raped multiple times, one case was raped 8-hours straight. 70 more are still left unidentified.
In court, Sinaga denied the claims of 48 of his victims saying that the men had approached him and wanted to live the sex-fantasy of playing dead or being asleep while having sex. The jury was forced to watch filming of his rape where some victims looked to be so heavily drugged they would throw up without waking and others snored the entirety of the time.
Despite the fact that no drug was found in Sinaga's flat, or in the system's of the men, the judge claimed Sinaga's statement was "ludicrous … that each of the males had asked you for oral sex or anal sex and had agreed to take part in your sexual fantasy by lying completely still throughout and not speaking or making any sounds, and had agreed to be filmed in the most intimate ways imaginable.”
Sinaga was described as a "square" by his friends. His small stature, young face, thick glasses and happy charming demeanor made him an unlikely suspect, if not for all the pictures and videos he himself collected.
The judge described his nonchalant attitude and bored expression in court as evidence, “Again, you seem to be actively enjoying the court process even as you stand there waiting to be sentenced....You are an evil serial sexual offender who preyed on young men who came into the city centre wanting nothing more than a good night with their friends....Rarely if ever have the courts seen such a campaign of rape covering so many victims over such a prolonged period.”
Sinaga is serving 88 concourse life sentences and has to wait 20-years before being considered for parole.
The Deputy Chief of the Crown Prosecution Services spoke out saying:
“His extreme sense of sexual entitlement almost defies belief and he would no doubt still be adding to his staggering tally had he not been caught. Sinaga’s unthreatening demeanour duped these young men - many of whom thanked him for his kindness in offering them a place to stay - into thinking this monster was a Good Samaritan. But once back at his flat he used victims as objects purely for his own gratification – then appears to have derived further twisted pleasure from re-watching his films in court and putting victims through the trauma of giving evidence.I would like to pay tribute and express my gratitude to all of these men for their incredible resilience, bravery and strength in helping us bring these harrowing cases to court. They have suffered severe and life-changing psychological trauma but should feel very proud that thanks to them this highly dangerous predator may never walk our streets again. We hope this will at least bring them some comfort as they come to terms with what has happened and move on with their lives.”
The chief described his actions as "the most prolific rapist in British legal history." Now with the case closed, Reynard Sinaga's victims can hopefully begin to heal from their ordeal with Rey the Raper.
