There's a new person in the family by the name of Elliot Page! Earlier today, Elliot formerly known as Ellen Page, best known for his characters #Juno, and #Vanya from the show #UmbrellaAcademy released a statement today about the "joy" of coming out as transgender.
“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.
To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better."
Page continued to point out that despite the joyous moment that he felt fear in coming out and that was something black and latinx transgenders feel very often.
"To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. "In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women."
He went on to say that people weren't being "cancelled" but instead they were "hurting people."
I am one of those people and we won’t be silent in the face of your attacks."
PUBLIC REACTION
Many on Twitter are congratulating Page on his new journey and praising him for his bravery. @TheElliotPage is trending with the news, but so is #Vanya as people are wondering what happens to Page's most popular role at the moment.
If you haven't seen the show, The Umbrella academy is a diverse show that embraces the LGBT culture. Some fans are pointing out that the name "Vanya" is a neutral name so there does not need to be any changes. Other fans are upset that they have "lost a lesbian" in the show, or call for a #recastvanya.
At the moment, there is nothing from Netflix or the showrunners of Umbrella Academy that state anything in the way of recasting so we look forward to seeing Elliot Page reprise his role as Vanya in Season 3!
