Yahira Nesby has become the 21st Black trans woman to lose her life to senseless hateful violence this year. According to Brooklyn’s News 12, police were called around 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon to a building in East Flatbrush. Nesby was shot twice, and had passed by the time police got there.
Police have a man in custody that they believe committed the crime. His name has yet to be made public. Pose star #IndyaMoore took to Twitter and said:
News of Nesby’s tragic death came from T Time Network’s Instagram page. T Time is New York based and was founded by Ashley Breathe, an activist and artist.
Paige Dula, founder of the Charlotte based trans activist group Genderlines had this to say: “We at Genderlines would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Yahira Nesby. Again, we are witness to the dangerous reality transgender women of color face every day in this country.”
Nesby’s loved ones have taken to social media in memorialization. My heart goes out to them and I hope that people start paying attention to how serious this is.
