Atlanta Has Hopes to Build a New LGBTQ+ Community Center: Here's How You Can Get Involved

Gayes, did you know that Atlanta is the largest Metro in America without an LGBTQ+ Community Center? The Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority (AFCRA) has been conducting a study to explore what an LGBTQ+ community space in Atlanta could possibly look like.

The AFCRA hopes that through stakeholder engagement, surveys and community gatherings, it will be able to gather the needs of the LGBTQ+ community at large and create a safe and welcoming space for the community.

AFCRA has created a survey that will directly impact their feasibility study and has already garnered over 650 responses from persons within Atlanta area. They are inviting the public to complete their multilingual Community Input Survey, which will remain open until October 2025. Take the survey here.

“This proposed hub for the LGBTQ+ community is an opportunity for the Authority to not only provide a safe, welcoming, exceptionally maintained facility, but also a place where resources and a sense of belonging can be gained,” said Kerry Stewart, AFCRA’s Executive Director.

This year-long feasibility study has hopes that the center will prioritize and hopefully manifest the queer community’s distinct needs, possibilities and unique, shared experiences.

“Atlanta continues to be a beacon for LGBTQ+ people… This feasibility study – and the vision for a potential LGBTQ+ Community Center – will be shaped directly by the way the community tells us they want and need,” he said in a statement to Gaye Magazine.

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, AFCRA will be setting the stage for National Pride Month by hosting a SOLD-OUT Community Gathering from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

The event promises to be welcoming and interactive and will provide attendees and opportunity to network, meet the leadership team, learn about the project itself and, through hands-on activities, provide visions for the Community Center.
