Drag Queen Marti Cummings is Running for N.Y City Council

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

Drag artist Marti Gould Cummings will be running in the 2021 election to become N.Y city council. Over the past few years members of the LGBTQ community have been making a stand even more than before in politics.

If elected into office, Marti Gould Cummings will become the first drag artist to be sworn into public office in New York. Cummings is the founder of NYC Hells Kitchen Democrats and current board member of Community Board 9. Hells Kitchen Democrats engages people to advocate on issues in the community. Marti is also a member of boards for the Center for Homeless of the LGBTQ youth. It is safe to say Marti has built a name for himself as a activist and leader of his community.

“I am a strong believer that change really begins at the local level,” says Cummings. “City races are important because the work done locally affects day to day life for the people in our community. We will work to ensure our streets are safe and people are protected. Too many people have been injured or killed walking or on bikes around our city and I want to continue the work being done in City Hall now to ensure that people are safe. We also must work on environmental issues to combat not only climate change but the secondary health issues arising as a result of our climate neglect. Our neighborhood has a high rate of asthma and cancer and we have to work to combat the causes and ensure each person is able to receive the care they need. I also will work to bring our community together to improve police relationships and ensure all people feel equally cared for. We must also support the economic opportunities for those just starting out.”

Marti was cast in Fusion TV's, Shade Queens of NYC, and was a regular on Bravo TV's Watch What Happens Live. Marti has also been featured in a McDonalds commercial on VH1. He is also the face of Go, promoting pride for the City of New York.
