Comedian/musician, Elijah Daniel purchased a town and renamed it Gay Hell, MI. If you don't know who Elijah Daniel is, here is what you should know. He is a well-known youtuber, comedian and musician. He's known for his song 'Rick & Morty' under his rap name, Lil Phag. The rapper purchased the town as a way of protesting against the Trump administration for banning the LGBTQ flags on the flagpoles at the embassies throughout the world.
Elijah posted a tweet on Twitter saying, "ahead of pride month Trump's administration put a ban on embassy's flying the pride flags. so as of today, I am now the owner of Hell, Michigan. I bought the whole town. And my first act as owner, I have renamed my town to Gay Hell, MI. The only flags allowed to fly are pride."
He also stated on Twitter, "Gay Hell, MI has everything. A library, a place to lock you love in Gay Hell, and even a WEDDING CHAPEL TO GET GAY MARRIED IN HELL!"
Elijah Daniel has done other stunts, such as this back in 2017 when he was the Mayor of Hell for a day and banned heterosexual people in the town. Even though this particular stunt wouldn't be considered a stunt, more of a statement. According to CNN, Daniel states, "Getting my audience involved in politics by doing it in a funny way."
Daniel, who is actually a Michigan native, tells CNN, "I'm just from Michigan and every time we drove past we knew that town, oh that's Hell. I just thought turning it into Gay Hell would be funny," after he made his decision to rename the town.
Daniel hasn't reported how much money he spent to own the town temporarily, but he is hoping to keep the town permanently.
