Gaye Magazine is seeking passionate, currently enrolled college students to join our editorial team as News Writer Interns. This fellowship is designed for students who aspire to build a career in journalism with a focus on LGBTQ+ storytelling. Intern writers will choose a specific track—Entertainment/Celebrity News or Political News—allowing them to develop expertise in their chosen field.
Applicants must have strong knowledge and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community, with an emphasis on Black LGBTQ+ culture, media, and public figures.
Interns will work directly with the Editorial Team and Editor-in-Chief, gaining hands-on experience in professional digital journalism.
Be a currently enrolled college student eligible for internship credit through their institution. If you are not a college student or not eligible to receive college credit, please note that applying for this program will be unpaid for its duration.
Strong interest in journalism, media, LGBTQ+ culture, or community storytelling.
Well-versed in Black LGBTQ+ history, culture, and current events.
Excellent writing, research, and email communication skills.
Strong ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Reliable, organized, and able to meet tight article deadlines whilst reporting accurate information.
Prior writing or campus media experience is a plus, but not required.
Utilize social media and reputable news sources to research and pitch daily and weekly news stories
Report on current events, LGBTQ+ public figures, community topics, and relevant cultural conversations.
Write timely, accurate, and engaging articles aligned with the chosen news focus area.
Pitch feature articles, conduct interviews, and handle communication logistics with guests when necessary to support editorial campaigns and guest interviews.
Collaborate with editors to revise and refine content.
Attend weekly virtual editorial team meetings and 1 on 1 review sessions with EiC.
Assist with fact-checking, sourcing, and contributing to content calendars.
Maintain consistent communication with the editorial team and meet deadlines.
