Colman Domingo and Robert O’Hara Set to Write New Live-Action Princess Tiana Film

Disney fans, a new chapter in Princess Tiana’s world is on the horizon, with Colman Domingo teaming up with Robert O’Hara to bring a live-action story to life.

Gayes, it looks like Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo may be taking audiences back to the bayou for another adventure with Princess Tiana.

Earlier this week, Deadline reported that Domingo is developing an original live-action feature about Princess Tiana. The project, which he is currently writing with Robert O’Hara, is inspired by Disney’s beloved 2009 animated film, “The Princess and the Frog.”

If you’re among those who’d rather see the beloved 2D classic left untouched, don’t fret: the project is being developed as a spinoff, not a live-action adaptation of the original film.

The news comes as a welcome surprise for fans of the franchise, after Walt Disney Animation Studios shelved “Tiana,” the animated spinoff series slated to stream on Disney+.

First announced in December 2020, “Tiana” was envisioned as a musical series for the streamer, with Anika Noni Rose set to reprise her role as Princess Tiana. However, the project was ultimately axed as the animation studio shifted away from producing long-form streaming content.

Since its debut in 2009, “The Princess and the Frog,” which introduced Disney’s first Black princess, has grown into a beloved franchise and a lasting fixture in popular culture.

In 2024, the film leaped beyond the screen and into Disney parks, with “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” debuting at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

The log flume attraction, which replaced Splash Mountain, takes riders on a journey through outdoor bayou scenes before transitioning into immersive indoor dark ride sequences.

Last month, Domingo earned two Emmy nominations for his performances in “Euphoria” and “The Four Seasons.”

Over the last decade, Domingo has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated film actors, earning consecutive Academy Award nominations for “Rustin” and “Sing Sing.” He has also received recognition from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and numerous critics’ groups.

Next, Domingo can be seen in Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” a sci-fi thriller that follows humanity as it confronts the truth behind an existential event amid a coordinated global disclosure plan.

He will also star alongside Nicholas Hoult and Emma Corrin in “The Servant,” a contemporary psychological thriller set in 1950s New York.

O’Hara is an openly Black LGBTQ+ playwright, theater director and screenwriter known for work that often explores race, sexuality, identity and American history.

O’Hara’s notable works include “Insurrection: Holding History” and “Bootycandy,” which received the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ+ drama, and “Barbecue.” In 2020, he received a Tony Award nomination for best direction of a play for his work on “Slave Play,” cementing his influence on the modern stage.
