Perez Hilton Recovering After Being Hospitalized For Livestreaming Self-Harm

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton was hospitalized Tuesday night in Florida after authorities responded to reports of an individual livestreaming self-harm on social media, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Hilton, 48, drew widespread concern from fans and viewers after a TikTok livestream late Tuesday appeared to show him bleeding and engaging in acts of self-harm, prompting a flurry of reports to Miami-Dade authorities and the platform.

The sheriff’s office said it received multiple calls about an individual livestreaming self-harm. Deputies located the person’s residence and spoke with family members on scene, who confirmed he was alone inside the home.

“In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication,” the department said in a statement shared with media. Deputies said that, unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and using crisis intervention techniques can reduce the risk of harm to the individual, deputies, and the public.

Deputies initially disengaged tactically while continuing to monitor the situation and provide support to the family, the department said.

The department later confirmed the individual had been “safely recovered” and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where he received medical attention. The department’s Crisis Response Unit and licensed mental health professionals also responded to the scene to support the family.

A TikTok spokesperson, speaking on background, said the platform’s automated moderation systems flagged the livestream within minutes and routed it to the company’s U.S.-based human moderation team for review. 

The spokesperson said TikTok alerted law enforcement to help get Hilton support. According to TikTok, the stream ran for roughly 10 to 15 minutes, despite reports saying it ran for around 34 minutes. The company also said it closed several subsequent livestreams within 90 seconds and banned the account. The spokesperson said content of this nature violates TikTok’s Community Guidelines and is removed when identified.

The initial statement from the department did not name Hilton. Authorities later confirmed the person involved was Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., according to NBC6 Miami.

The livestream, which aired on TikTok before the platform removed it, appeared to show Hilton with visible cuts and holding what appeared to be a knife.

Hilton’s family and team issued a statement Wednesday confirming he is receiving medical care: “We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well-being.” Read the full statement here.
