Transgender hairstylist and wigmaker, Mia Jackson better known as Tokyo Stylez, is the icon behind some of your favorite celebrities' hair do's, such as Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Jenner. Tokyo is taking her leap from behind the styling chair to the spotlight with a collaboration with Snap Originals.
The Nebraska native has recently put together a docuseries titled "Queen of Stylez", that will follow her career working with A list celebrities to give them the look that they most desire.
The series can be found on Snapchat’s Discover page and will be under the production of Glass Entertainment where we can expect 8 episodes that will be airing daily. Since it’s premiere on November 21st, the series has already gained nearly 130K subscribers and continues to grow by the minute. Fans can expect to see big stars like Paris Hilton, Cardi B Mulatto and Kash Doll.
Aside from her day to day life as a hairstylist, Tokyo also plans to show her fans a different side of her as she gets personal about the obstacles she had to overcome in her rise to fame as well as her family's reaction towards her recent transition.
In a recent interview with Nylon, Tokyo explains, “We've been working so hard to get a show for a while, and now finally we got it. I just wanted to be able to use the platform to show the world who I really am, because I don't really showcase that on Instagram and other social media platforms — I just post pictures and, you know, nobody gets to see my personality, my character, or the behind the scenes. I just wanted people to see how crazy it really is, it's not always about the glitz and the glamour."
In episode 1, we all get a glimpse into the relationship between Tokyo and her "good friend" Cardi B as she attempts to prepare Cardi for a photoshoot. In the episode Tokyo reveals that when she first met the famed rapper she was still in her “boy stage”. When Tokyo opened up to Cardi about wanting to transition she told her, “If you’re gonna do it, do it right.”
And oh did she! Following her transition, Tokyo wakes up everyday and lives entirely in her truth as she continues to make a name for herself in the industry.
Alex Leibow, development manager at Snap Originals is excited to be collaborating with Tokyo. He shared with NYLON over email, "Not only is Tokyo one of, if not the, most famous and talented hair and wig stylists in the world who works with the biggest celebrities that our audience cares about, but she's also going through such a powerful and courageous time of her life as she's fully transitioned into a woman and discovering her identity. It's stories like hers that inspire you to seek the life you want to live and not let any obstacle hold you back."
