Legendary Chi-town bred rapper Da Brat announced yesterday that she is expecting her first child with wife Jesseca "Judy" Harris- Dupart. The news comes as a surprise from the 48-year-old rapper as she mentions that the idea of extending her family started as a joke.
Initially, the couple posted a photo shortly after their nuptials last year with a caption that hinted towards a pregnancy but it was a reference to the couple’s collaboration for Judy’s hair care line, Kaleidoscope.
"But then we got a huge response. It was like, 'Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!'"
Upon announcing her pregnancy Da Brat mentioned that she thinks that people will be shocked, especially given her robust hip-hop persona. However, she and Judy played on the expected shock by revealing her bump in an old-school gangster-themed photo shoot. While embracing the dichotomy of her hip-hop persona and her pregnancy, she says that she loved the results of the photoshoot.
Da Brat mentioned that children were never really a part of the plan saying, "I just thought it wasn't in the cards for me. I've had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn't get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn't going to happen for me."
However, Brat says that it wasn’t until she met her other half that she began to look at life differently. The possibility of having a child with her blushing bride became an idea worth exploring. Although Da Brat’s talents have been far from hidden, she has kept her personal life very private over the years. She recently shared she would've come out sooner if she knew how “nice and loving” it was.
Brat also mentions that meeting Judy and falling in love was a huge part of her inspiration to live her truth openly.
The couple said there was a bit of a “tug-of-war” in the beginning as to who should carry the pregnancy. Judy, who had three children prior to her marriage to Da Brat, told Sherri on the Sherri Show she was convinced that Brat should have the experience of carrying because “she is so nurturing”.
Ultimately, the decision for Da Brat to carry worked out in favor of both women as Judy experienced extreme health complications as a result of the egg retrieval surgery that she had to undergo as a part of the pregnancy process. Not only did Judy experience her share of health issues, but Da Brat also had to have fibroids and polyps removed before undergoing the embryo transfer procedure. Immediately following their attempt at reciprocal IVF (in vitro fertilization), Brat experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage.
"I had never been so excited about something that I didn't even know I wanted," says Da Brat in her exclusive interview with People Magazine. "I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me."
Fortunately, the couple still had viable eggs available and were able to try again.
When asked by Sherri, "how far along are you?"
Judy replied, "We are 18 weeks which is 5 months." Da Brat then chimed in innocently saying, "I passed my first semester."
With Da Brat firmly in her second trimester. She expressed happiness by saying that “it’s just a blessing. I’m excited!”
A huge congratulations to Da Brat and her wife Judy! The Gaye family wishes you both a safe and healthy pregnancy!
