Sergio Hudson Furthers The Legacy of Patrick Kelly Through Documentary "Love, Patrick"
One designer honoring the one who made space for him to exist — Sergio Hudson joins the Patrick Kelly documentary as executive producer.

Fashion can be cynical, which is why it is important to know your history. And Sergio Hudson is helping to preserve a stitch of it.

In an Instagram announcement on September 13th, Hudson shared that he would be joining as executive producer on Love, Patrick: Nothing Is Impossible, a documentary honoring Patrick Kelly, a legend in fashion history and a Black queer icon whose influence on the fashion industry has never fully been given its due.

His involvement is a reminder of the profound and lasting impact that Black queer people have had on fashion, and a declaration that their stories deserve to be told, preserved and celebrated.

Sergio Hudson has never been shy about his influences. But when it comes to Patrick Kelly, the Black, gay boy from Vicksburg, Mississippi, who became the first American admitted to the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter and changed fashion forever, Hudson does not just cite him as an influence. He credits him as a foundation. Now he is doing something about it.

Hudson has been announced as executive producer of Love, Patrick: Nothing Is Impossible, a feature documentary that brings Kelly’s extraordinary life, artistry and enduring cultural legacy to the screen. The film is produced by PeachSoul and directed by the Horne Brothers, three-time Emmy Award winners, Edward R. Murrow recipients and Pulitzer Prize finalists.

The project was co-created by award-winning media and cultural storytelling strategist Jessica Manning and nationally recognized broadcaster and cultural commentator Ray Cornelius, both of whom also serve as executive producers.

“Without Patrick Kelly, there is no Sergio Hudson. There is no me, and there are so many of us who would not be where we are today without the path he created. I owe it to Patrick, and to the generations of Black designers who came after him, to be a part of this project and help preserve his legacy.” — Sergio Hudson, Fashion Designer and Executive Producer, Love, Patrick: Nothing Is Impossible

In his role as executive producer, Hudson will provide strategic and creative consultation on the documentary’s fashion narrative and cultural framing, while helping the filmmakers identify and engage additional voices for select interviews. It is a role that feels less like a professional decision and more like an act of gratitude. One designer honoring the one who made space for him to exist.

For those unfamiliar with Kelly’s story, the documentary arrives at exactly the right moment. Born in Vicksburg, Miss., Kelly charted an extraordinary path through Atlanta and New York before arriving in Paris, where his talent, audacity and singular visual language propelled him onto the international fashion stage.

In 1988, he became the first American designer admitted to the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter, the governing body of France’s prestigious ready-to-wear industry. Known for exuberant silhouettes, fearless color, mismatched buttons, provocative iconography and a radical sense of joy, Kelly built an international fashion business while confronting racism, cultural stereotypes and exclusion with wit and unapologetic creativity. His meteoric rise was cut short by his death in 1990 at age 35 during the height of the AIDS crisis.

More than three decades later, Kelly’s influence continues to reverberate throughout fashion and popular culture. Yet the magnitude of his achievements remains too often fragmented from the broader canon of American fashion history. Love, Patrick: Nothing Is Impossible seeks to change that.

Through intimate testimony, archival material and contemporary reflection, the film examines Kelly’s influence on fashion, Black creative expression, LGBTQ+ history and global culture. Sergio Hudson is building a legacy of his own. And in doing so, he is making sure Patrick Kelly’s never gets lost.
